If you were to list all of the things needed to have a church, what would you put on your list?
I’d like to suggest that for us to have a church, we need to have “mutual ministry.” Put another way, the marks of a true church are the preached Word, the sacraments properly administered, evidences of discipline, and finally—ministry.
What do I mean by that? Ministry that occurs within the body.
Not the church having a ministry, but that it IS ministry.
Jesus described the meaning of ministry quite clear in Mark 10:45:
He said, “I did not come to be served, but to serve.”
Jesus declared further, “Whosoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.”
In simple terms—ministry equals servanthood!
Both pastor and layperson—ministering servants together!
